Elizabeth Traynor - Biography

I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. At age 5, learning to read was great, but learning that red and yellow made orange was thrilling. Later, five years of Saturday morning classes at the Delaware Art Museum guided me toward illustration. It took me a while to realize that my frequent exposure to original paintings by Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and the Pre-Raphaelites influenced my own work. Perhaps this explains my instinctive desire to draw with precise realism, imbued with beauty, no matter the medium.

I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1981 with a BFA in illustration. I was fortunate to have studied under Chris Van Allsburg, David Macaulay, and Mahler Ryder, among other fine instructors. Later, I too became an instructor, teaching illustration and foundation art at the Delaware College of Art and Design from 1998 to 2004. I was head of the illustration department for four of those years.

My first hardcover children's book,
"F is for First State: A Delaware Alphabet", was published in fall 2005; my second, "V is for Venus Flytrap: A Plant Alphabet", was published in summer 2009. Both were painted in watercolor for Sleeping Bear Press.

I've got another children's book or two up my sleeve, but in the meantime, I'm available to share my talent for creating fine, original art for you in scratchboard or watercolor.
